When you're sitting at home writing all day and you're an indie author, the question becomes: what makes launch day special? You have to create your own noise.
So for The Outcast, I knew I needed to do something, but I didn't really have a firm plan. I did order a cake (more of that later), but plans were hazy beyond that. If I was smart, I'd have jumped on the Tiktok Meghan Trainor "Made You Look" bandwagon, but to be honest I was dubious about whether I could get Mr Eve Riley doing the moves (he is a techie).
For some reason I now can't fathom, I decided to record something as I ran to the gym.
Whilst I was videoing, I knocked over some bins and ran into a lampost, and had to stop recording at several points because I was laughing too much. I looked like a nutter talking to camera whilst I was standing waiting for the traffic lights to change on a freezing Edinburgh morning. Two further hours were then spent trying to piece together a video where I didn't look completely crazy (feel free to judge!).
After I posted it, I had several messages from long-time friends, who are a bit bemused by my new author career, saying, "Ummm, what exactly are you doing?"
Fortunately, my eighty lovely ARC readers swung into action and posted everything about The Outcast everywhere. So the back of my Instagram account started to buzz and quickly turning into a homage to all things Fabian.
And my traffic did this:
The first traffic spike was launch day, and the second one was because I did a giveaway of the two Tech Series books together. As people left hundreds of comments to enter the giveaway, social media very kindly sent that post out to a huge audience.
I mentioned at the beginning that I ordered a cake: with trepidation and with a cake maker I'd never used before. So, of course, I had to do a video about that too:

It was a great day, and a great laugh. I can't wait to do the next one.
