Ever since I started writing The Techboys Series, I have been slightly obsessed with how high stakes can make a romance sizzle. There is just something about that perfect mix of adrenaline, public pressure, and a "win at all costs" attitude that makes the eventual surrender so much sweeter.

Lately, I have been trading the tech boardroom for the ice rink. If you loved the tension in The Game, you know I have a soft spot for athletes who play as hard as they love. And let’s be honest: is there anything more delicious than two rivals who are supposed to hate each other but can’t seem to keep their hands off one another?

If you are looking for that "on-ice heat" to get you through the winter, here are 5 hockey romance books that are absolutely hitting the mark for me right now.

5 Hockey Romance Books for Heated Rivalry Fans

  1. Icebreaker by Hannah Grace

Icebreaker. Hannah Grace. Hockey Romance. Sports Romance. Maple Hills. Skating Romance.

If you spend any time on BookTok, you’ve likely seen this gorgeous cover. Icebreaker is the ultimate "opposites attract" sports romance that leans heavily into the forced proximity trope. When a map error forces the university hockey team and the figure skating team to share a single rink, sparks (and a fair amount of ice shavings) fly.

The dynamic between Nate Hawkins, the disciplined hockey captain, and Anastasia Allen, the hyper-organized figure skater, is perfection. What I love most is how Nate is essentially a "golden retriever" hero who is completely obsessed with his girl. It’s fun, it’s incredibly steamy, and it features that found-family vibe that makes a contemporary romance feel like home.

  1. The Deal by Elle Kennedy

The Deal. Elle Kennedy. Off-Campus. Hockey Romance. Fake-dating. Trope. Sports Romance.

For many of us, this was the gateway drug to hockey romance. The Deal is the first book in the Off-Campus series and sets a high bar for the "academic bargaining" trope. Hannah Wells is a music major who needs to catch her crush's eye, and Garrett Graham is the star hockey player who needs to pass an ethics exam to stay on the team.

The deal is simple: she tutors him, and he pretends to date her to boost her social standing. But the banter between these two is legendary, and the emotional depth goes much further than your average college romance. Kennedy handles heavy themes with a light touch, making the eventual "happily ever after" feel truly earned.

  1. Role Model by Rachel Reid

Role Model. Rachel Reid. Hockey Romance. MM Rmance. Sports Romance. HBO. Gay Romance.

While many fans flock to Heated Rivalry, I think Role Model is a masterclass in the redemption arc. Troy Preston is a "villain" in the eyes of the media and his fellow players, stuck in a cycle of toxic masculinity and self-hatred. When he’s traded to the Ottawa Cupids, he meets Harris Hughes, the team’s social media manager and a literal ray of sunshine.

This is a beautiful MM hockey romance that deals with the pressures of being an out athlete in a professional league. Watching Troy slowly lower his guard and realize he is allowed to be happy is incredibly moving. It’s a slow-burn romance that pays off with so much heart and heat.

  1. The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic

The Foxhole Court. Hockey Romance. Nora Sakavic. MM Romance. Gay Romance.

Okay, technically the sport is "Exy" (a fictional mix of lacrosse and hockey), but the energy is pure hockey rivalry. This is for the readers who want their sports romance with a side of grit and high stakes. It follows Neil Josten, a boy on the run from his past, as he joins a team of misfits and criminals.

The rivalry between the Palmetto State Foxes and the Edgar Allan Ravens is intense, and the slow-burn connection between the characters is one of the most dedicated "enemies to lovers" journeys I have ever read. If you like your athletes a little bit dark, a little bit broken, and fiercely protective, this series is a rabbit hole you’ll happily fall down.

  1. Pucked by Helena Hunting

Pucked Hockey Romance Book. Helena Hunting. Sports Romance. NHL. Bad Boy.

If you want something that leans into the humor and the chaotic side of professional sports, Pucked is your go-to. This book introduces us to the world of "puck bunnies" and the professional athletes who live in the spotlight. It is laugh-out-loud funny and features a hero, Alex Waters, who is as charming as he is talented.

The writing is fast-paced and witty, capturing the high-energy lifestyle of the NHL while keeping the romantic tension front and center. It’s a great pick if you want a "feel good" read that doesn't shy away from the steamier side of the genre.

There is something so raw about a rivalry that turns into a deep, soul-deep connection. It’s about being seen for who you really are, even when you’re at your most competitive. Whether it's the professional leagues or the college rinks, these books prove that the best games are won off the ice.
