Another great joy of launching The Refusal was finding out what readers had to say.

It was such a delight to see all their edits when they produced posts for the book, including in some cases, video. I loved all the pictures they chose for Janus and Jo, what they imagined in their heads when I described Janus's office and the coffee shops where Kate and Jo met. "Chapter 34" very quickly became a thing.

When I look back at these, I realise that the sex scene in Chapter 34 was clearly a thing for a lot of people. Many of the quotes came from there, and people messaged me saying things like Woah! or just flame emojis. I'll let you into a secret: I wrote a much longer sex scene for Chapter 34!

It got culled on the advice of my editor, and she was right: it did drag on the story. But I still love the days that Jo and Janus spent in that hotel in Hong Kong and I'm planning to send the full scene out to my mailing list at some point, so if you're interested in reading it, sign up to my mailing list here.

Readers also picked lines they liked from the books' key scenes, and it was great to see these brought to life. Lines I had passed over or didn't remember that really spoke to them, and wonderful pictures showing the steamy scenes in the book.
